August 2021 – If your commercial property was impacted by an increased assessment for tax year 2018 you may be in for a property tax refund. Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court upheld a lower court ruling that the city illegally reassessed only one segment of the city’s real estate in 2018. The court ruled that this is a violation of the Pennsylvania Constitution which calls for all properties within a jurisdiction to be assessed and taxed using the same process. In this case, Commonwealth Court agreed with the lower court in that, by not including other property types, commercial properties were unlawfully targeted for reassessment. At issue are the 2018 values assigned by the Office of Property Assessment for many commercial properties.
