CURRENT

David Dunn acts as Director of Sales and Use Tax based out of Invoke’s Austin, TX office. In his role, David utilizes his more than 30 years of experience in the Texas Comptroller’s office to help guide Invoke’s Sales and Use Tax practice through Texas state audits and refund claims. In addition, David leads Invoke through the resolution of Independent Audit Reviews and hearing and settlement cases.

David’s wealth of knowledge about Texas state tax laws and policies are instrumental in the development and training of Invoke’s Sales and Use staff. Drawing on his insight into the innerworkings of the Comptroller’s office, David plays a vital part in the research, marketing, and client relations components of Invoke’s overall business strategy.

PAST

Prior to joining Invoke, David was with the Texas Comptroller’s Office for more than 30 years. As a Comptroller employee, David spent 22 of those years as a tax auditor in San Antonio and Austin, independently conducting complex state tax audits across all industries that included multi-national and Fortune 500 companies.

During his final eight years, David led the Comptroller’s Independent Audit Review (IAR) team which is comprised of highly experienced employees tasked to resolve disputes between taxpayers, their representatives, and audit staff. Disputes involved issues relating to taxability, audit practices, sampling, estimations, and accounting methods.

As an Independent Audit Reviewer, David conducted hundreds of conferences. His post-conference legal and other research ensured appropriate application of tax statutes, rules, rulings, court cases, tax policy and audit policy/procedures which resulted in hundreds of resolved taxation issues. As the IAR team supervisor, David collaborated with reviewers, audit management, audit staff and tax policy to ensure accuracy of over 600 reports submitted by his team.

EDUCATION AFFILIATIONS

David holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has obtained 24 additional hours in Accounting and Taxation credits from the University of Texas-San Antonio.

OTHER

Originally from Nebraska, David made his way to Texas after a three-year stint abroad in England. David and his wife reside in the Austin, Texas suburb of Georgetown and enjoy spending time together and with their geographically dispersed children and grandchildren. David also enjoys the occasional round of golf when the time allows.
