National Director of Sales & Use and Severance Tax
Scott Schwertner is the National Director of Sales & Use and Severance Tax and has been serving Invoke Tax Partners clients for more than 10 years. Under Scott’s leadership, the Sales & Use Tax team provides overpayment reviews, audit defense, tax research, and best practice consulting across the United States for a variety of industries, specializing in Manufacturing and Oil & Gas. His team prides itself in providing best-in-class services while creating lasting business relationships with clients.
Scott used previous Severance Tax experience to build Invoke’s Severance Tax service line as a new offering. The Severance Tax team has created a process to analyze, obtain, and maximize the benefits of exemptions for clients. They also complete marketing reviews to maximize deductions and thus reduce the tax liability.
Scott has over 20 years of Sales & Use Tax experience in both consulting and industry. He started his career in Big 4 accounting and worked primarily in the Manufacturing and Oil & Gas sectors. Scott spent the following nine years in industry with some of the largest manufacturers in the world, including the food, military, and chemical manufacturing sectors. He gained a whole new perspective of the Sales & Use Tax industry during this time, allowing him to relate to and better serve his current clients’ needs. Scott gained invaluable experience in Property Tax as well, completing valuations and negotiations of values in multiple states for large chemical plants.
Scott is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He obtained his CMI designation in Sales Tax in 2006.
Scott is very active in his community. He was elected to two terms (2010-2014) to the Lake Jackson City Council, serving as Mayor Pro-tem in 2012. In 2014, Scott was elected as a Trustee for the Brazosport ISD School Board. He was elected to two terms and has served as Vice President since 2017.
Scott is also very active in a number of charities and organizations. He is the President of the Lake Jackson Business Association, two-time Chair of the Brazosport College Scholarship Soiree, Board Member/Muster Chair/Golf Tournament Director of the Brazoria County Texas A&M Club, and member of the Brazoria County Economic Alliance. In addition, Scott has coached both of his daughters in youth soccer, basketball, and volleyball for many years.
