Strategic Advisor - West Region
Tim Doss is a Strategic Advisor for West Coast Property Tax at Invoke Tax Partners. Inspired by the vision of the firm, Tim is helping to build a model property tax practice that will serve a broad client base not only in the West Coast, but throughout the entire country. He is confident in Invoke’s trajectory, as he believes the current assembled team is the most talented group of property tax professionals he has worked with in the past four decades. In his role, Tim draws on his more than 45 years of experience to help identify and evaluate long-term avenues for growth and client service out West.
Tim began his career as a staff appraiser in a California County Assessor’s Office. After five years of learning the technical rigor of appraisal, auditing, and assessment appeals, Tim left the county to start his own appraisal company. Tim performed appraisals for numerous property types and purposes, with his ultimate goal to focus on property tax valuation matters.
With this goal in mind, Tim accepted a position with a Fortune 100 company as a property tax manager. He was able to settle many complex real estate tax appeals and personal property audits in California, which attracted the attention of the company’s Big Eight audit firm. Tim was offered the chance to start the first property tax practice in the Big Eight. As a result of his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to attract and maintain relationships with large sophisticated real estate investors, Tim spent the next eleven years as Partner in Charge of the West Coast State and Local Tax Practice for a Big Six accounting firm and as Co-Partner in Charge of a Big Four national property tax practice.
When the Enron Scandal ensued, Tim decided that it was time to leave the public accounting arena. He partnered with a San Francisco real estate attorney and co-founded a boutique property tax consulting company. By leveraging past business relationships, this venture quickly became the premier West Coast firm and attracted the largest owners of Commercial, Industrial and Multi-Family real estate in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tim and his partner sold the practice to a large national property tax firm after 18 years.
Following a short period of retirement, Tim was approached by Invoke to help build and execute an exciting new business plan.
Tim graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Rhetoric and Economics from University of California, Berkeley. While in Public Accounting, Tim was selected to attend The Kellogg School of International Business where he received an Executive MBA. He currently sits on the Assessment Appeals Board in Merced, Calif. and has been active in the Institute for Professionals in Taxation and the California Alliance of Taxpayer Advocates.
In addition to his property tax affiliations, Tim plays an active role in the Mayor’s Fiscal Advisory Committee in San Francisco, a Country Club Board of Directors, the Finance Committee of his Parish Church, and the Board of Directors for the Junior Golf Association of Northern California.
Tim loves to cook and travel with his wife. He is an avid golfer and long-distance cyclist. He and his wife have four children, ten grandchildren, and are proud parents of their dog named Freddy.
