This week California issued their 2024 property tax appeal calendar featuring a county-by-county breakdown of the assessment appeals filing period pursuant to the requirements of Revenue and Taxation Code section 1603. This calendar applies to both commercial real estate property tax and business personal property tax in California.
As in previous years, the regular appeals filing period begins on July 2 and either ends on September 15 or November 30 depending on if the county assessor has chosen to mail assessment notices by August 1. Since both deadlines fall on a weekend in 2024, those dates have been moved to September 16, 2024 and December 2, 2024. While changes to the filing deadlines at the county level do not happen often, and no major occurrences have happened recently, there have been a few major counties in California, most notably Orange County and Ventura County, that have changed their filing deadlines in conjunction with newly elected county assessors.
